Use low exposure and brightness

Using low exposure or brightness make your photo low and much more darker. It is not compulsory you need to do it, it vary according to the picture light. If the picture is more brighter try to reduce exposure and brightness.

Make your shadows darker

Shadows gives details and also it helps to make something dark by reducing it. Reducing shadows is really helpful to make your photo much darker and keep concentrate because shadows can reduce exposure light in the picture, especially in hair, face, shoulder etc.

Adjust whites with blacks

I think most of the editing software or apps having the adjustment whites and blacks, if it is not leave it, but if it is there you should try to combine white with black.
For example :- If a picture is more lighter, reduce black and reduce white or the picture is more darker raise the blacks and whites according to the light condition.

Use dark vignette

Vignette is a important tool for moody tone editing. Use your vignette to make the corners of your photo dark, it gives a uniqueness and give viewers attention to the centre of the image. But, don't use too much of vignette at corners it may not give the nature effect, it looks weird and artificial. Using mild vignette according to the picture is better.

Try to reduce saturation

We know reducing saturation is makes the picture colourless but, we need to know that saturation can also help to make moody grey tones.

It is not compulsory to use but take it as a option and reduce mildly according to picture colour. If the picture is in contrasting colour you can avoid it.
